Haiti Reef Restoration

The coastal waters of Haiti have been adversely affected by two primary factors: the deforestation and destruction of steep mountains in the upper watershed areas of local rivers, which leads to deposits of silt in the coastal waters and onto coastal reefs; and the difficulty of fishermen to get farther out to sea where mature fish are located. Their sails are too fragile for the journey. Haiti Hope Fund Agroforestry Mission aims to address the problem of damaged river watersheds. For reef restoration, Haiti Hope Fund has partnered with a Haiti based Non Profit whose mission is to help restore the reefs that provide food and shelter for young fish. Part of this effort has involved getting used but good condition sails to Haiti for refitting to the local boats. The photo below shows our daughter Carly with representatives from Amiga Island Project (reef restoration) receiving the delivery of bags of sails donated by generous sailing folks in Southern California.
